Protection
All children have the right to feel safe, secure and protected.
Child protection must be ensured by the parents and the community which surrounds them. Children living in illegal gold mines live in a society without laws and rules. Their fathers go to the mines to work in the morning, but may not come home in the evening. Their mothers contribute to the family’s livelihood either by digging for gold nuggets in the mining waste or by selling their bodies in the bars.
La Rinconada is hell on earth. No one is safe there and at least one child without parents. It is a cold environment, polluted by mercury, filled with garbage and danger.
Golden Child Aid is working to raise awareness of this place on earth in the hope that the government will finally take responsibility. We also make sure that the children have warm and whole clothes as protection against the constant moisture and cold.
