La Rinconada

Children can be found working in mines in Asia, Africa, and Latin America and in parts of Europe. It is more common in the poorer counties though it is connected to poverty. Mining is often takes part in temporary, remote locations. One place more devastating than the other.

La Rinconada is a town in Peru at a height of 5,500 over sea level, built around an illegal gold mine. The city is called the hell on earth and is told to be one of the most extreme places on earth.

La Rinconada, a place where countless women and children get regularly raped, where law and order collapsed quite some time ago, where young girls are sent to garbage dumps in order to ‘recycle’ terribly smelling waste, and where almost all the men work in beastly conditions, trying to save at least some money, but where most of them simply ruin their health, barely managing to stay alive. A temperature that stands around zero, no heating, mercury pollution, no health care, no nutrition food, no clean water, no medication and no schooling. This is no place for children.
